FIFO vs. weighted average on the warehouse floor

Hands reviewing financial charts and a calculator

Cost method debates often stay in accounting policy binders. On the floor, the method decides which receipts “age out” first and which unit costs appear when someone writes off a damaged carton.

FIFO in aisle language

First-in, first-out ties valuation to receipt sequence. When older lots sit behind newer ones because pickers grab the easy face, physical flow and valuation flow diverge. Reviews then show quantity matches with surprising cost hits—or the reverse.

Weighted average smoothness

Moving or periodic weighted average dampens unit-cost spikes. That calm can hide purchasing mistakes until a large return or scrap event hits. Supervisors may under-react because the unit cost “looks normal” even when the underlying buy was expensive.

What to teach mixed teams

Autoconnectme labs ask learners to post the same physical loss under both methods and compare the narrative they would write in the auditing app. The exercise is less about picking a winner and more about predicting which variance story finance will challenge.

If your policy recently changed, schedule a layer integrity check before the next close. Method switches without a communication plan are a reliable source of false alarms in variance reports.
